Über Dieterich Buxtehude / About Dieterich Buxtehude

Regarding the name: Latest findings support the spelling "Dieterich", but the classic German "Dietrich" is the traditionally used version.

Life and Work of Buxtehude have been researched quite well. Childhood and youth are much less documented, though. Many of his compositions are lost or missing. In spite of that, the Buxtehude catalog liss about 220 works, from a small piece of organ music to the - regarding contemporary practice - "symphonic" oratorio. The most important sources for information and music are named below:

Catalog of Buxtehude's Works:

In 1974, Breitkopf published the Buxtehude-Werkeverzeichnis (BuxWV) by Georg Karstädt. It was updated in 1985. Quoting the incipits of each work and naming the text sources of vocal compositions, it is still an important help for dealing with this music.

In 2010, an update to the catalog has been presented. Lacking incipits and text sources, it tells about newer editions of the works. It is available on our website:

Sheet music and performance editions of Buxtehude's music:

One has to be aware of the difference between scolarly collected works editions and practical editions for performance.
The collected works editionwas begun in 1935 by the Ugrino group and comprised volumes I to VIII. They are available at a few university libraries only. As faksimilia, they were available at Broude edition again.

Meanwhile, Broude has completed the collected works edition. More information is available on pages 6-7 of this document, found on their website:

Editions for practical performance do exist for most of Buxtehude's music. Some unpublished works or editions with outdated copyright may be available on the internet. Music printed prior to 2010 is listed in the amended Buxtehude Works Catalog (see above).

Our website offers archives with the music once prepared for Ton Koopmans recording of Buxtehude's collected works. Moreover, we have the material for the Abendmusik "Das jüngste Gericht", provided by Roland Wilson.

Please note, that the Koopman material only contains instrumental parts. Vocal score, vocal parts and figured bass have to be taken from the collected works editions. We hope to be able to offer these parts in future, too.
